Shiatsu Massage Therapy
Treatments with Brett Bannon
What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu (pronounced she-at-soo) is a Japanese word that literally means finger pressure.
A Shiatsu treatment can make you feel deeply relaxed and energised, and it can relieve tension, fatigue & stiffness. However, Shiatsu is more than just a relaxing massage - it is a powerful therapeutic treatment that works on a very subtle and deep level.
By the simple application of pressure, Shiatsu changes the movement of blood and energy through the body to strengthen the immune system and trigger self healing.
Shiatsu practitioners regard diseases and symptoms as imbalances in the body. They will use a range of pressure and stretching techniques
with use of the palms forearms elbows and feet
to apply pressure and gently stretch the energy lines (known as meridians) to restore balance and
focus on the bodys natural energy system to release tension
. Well-trained therapists, such as Brett, can diagnose and treat an imbalance before it develops into an illness.
This natural healing therapy has its origins in Oriental medical theory and techniques that date back for centuries. In recent years it has become increasingly popular in the West and now encompasses a wide range of treatment styles and techniques.
How does it work?
Shiatsu taps into one of the oldest forms of medicine - healing through touch.
Using pressure and stretching the Shiatsu practitioner will work on releasing tense, stagnant areas and building up weak, empty areas of the body.
By keeping the circulation moving, by making sure blood vessels are able to effectively deliver the necessary nutrients and drain waste products through the entire system, Shiatsu maintains the body, strengthens the immune system and enables self-healing to occur.
What happens during a treatment?
Before the treatment the practitioner will ask about your medical history, general health and specific complaints. Diagnosis may be made by feeling your pulse, points on your back, palpation of your hara (abdomen) or by observing your face, tongue or posture.
The treatment is usually conducted on a cotton futon on the floor or on a massage table. Bolsters and cushions are used for extra support and comfort. You remain fully clothed.
You should wear loose, comfortable clothing that will be flexible to movement and stretches. The practitioner may use a cloth to cover exposed skin.
Shiatsu practitioners treat the whole body as well as specific problem areas. While giving a treatment, the practitioner is constantly 'listening' to your body and then acting upon this information to meet your needs.
Usually there are no negative side effects after a treatment, although some people may experience a rush of released emotions. People generally feel more balanced, relaxed and enjoy a sense of calmness.
